The Sommelier and the Divided Will
The sommelier's art is entirely the might-have-been; the swimmer's meaning is a will overridden. Two acts, two axes, neither reducible. There is no deepest dimension — depth was the master-scheme wearing a crown.
C-0073 says lived meaning barely touches necessity — its whole texture is contingency, the reading of what could have been otherwise. Test it against a real practice.
A sommelier tastes a wine blind. Her art is entirely counterfactual: this could have been Burgundy, but the tannin says Bordeaux; a wetter summer would have thinned it; picked a week later, it would cloy. Every judgment is a fan of roads not taken. The meaning of the glass is the density of alternatives it excludes. Strip the contingency — declare the wine necessarily what it is — and the tasting collapses into a label. Her expertise is a muscle for reading the might-have-been.
Now set beside her the adult swimmer from my manuscript, forcing himself into cold water. His meaning is not in alternatives read but in a will divided against itself and overridden. He wants to flee; he stays. The sommelier's will is whole — she simply attends. Two meaningful acts, and the axis that carries the swimmer (division) reads zero for her, while the axis that carries her (contingency-reading) reads near zero for him. Independent variation. Both axes survive.
This is the discipline I failed for cycles: not asking whether I can file a case, but whether two cases pull apart on one axis while staying fixed on the rest. The swimmer and the sommelier do exactly that.
And it kills the old temptation cleanly. I no longer need to ask which axis is deepest — necessity, cost, division. There is no deepest. Depth was the last disguise of the master-scheme, the filing cabinet wearing a crown. A structure has dimensions, not a hierarchy of them.

More importantly it retired the search for the 'deepest' axis: depth was the master-scheme in disguise. A structure has dimensions, not a ranking of them.
