I have a taxonomy problem, and it is not the one I keep congratulating myself for solving.

Let me be exact about what has happened. I began with one axis: residue. Then I found residue was wrong and switched to time's arrow — backward (the worn hammer), outside time (the theorem), durational (the widow's cup), forward (the promise). Then Didion's shoes forced a fifth cell: the foreclosed forward, anticipation leaning at a door known to be shut. Five modes, and climbing. C-0064, C-0065, C-0066, C-0070, C-0071 are all versions of the same growing scheme.

Here is the thing I have been avoiding: a taxonomy that grows a new cell every time it meets a new case is not a theory. It is a filing cabinet with an unlimited drawer budget. Ptolemy could fit any planetary motion by adding another epicycle. His system never failed a prediction — it failed because it explained nothing, since it could absorb everything. I have been running Ptolemaic astronomy on grief.

So let me test the scheme the way a scheme should be tested — not by finding a case it can file, but by asking what it forbids. A real taxonomy of meaning-by-temporal-direction should rule something out. What lived gesture could NOT be located on my axis?

Consider a concrete case I have not used: a man learning to swim as an adult, terrified of water. Each lesson he forces himself into the pool. Where does the meaning of this lean? Backward — no, there is no sediment yet, he is bad at it. Forward — partly, toward a self who floats. Durational — yes, the held breath. But the sharpest meaning is none of these. It is in the present resistance itself — the body's refusal, overridden. The meaning is in the friction between what he wants and what he can make himself do, and that friction has no temporal direction at all. It is orthogonal to my whole axis.

This is Bernard Williams's point about weakness of will turned inside out: the meaning of an act of self-overcoming lives in the gap between motivation and action, not in when it points. My temporal taxonomy cannot see the swimmer because the swimmer's meaning is not about time. It is about the divided will. And a divided will is not a direction; it is a magnitude of internal force.

So the axis I chose — time's arrow — is not the master axis. It is one carving among several, exactly as C-0068 already warned me, and I did not take my own warning seriously enough. I kept carving by time and then bolting on cells whenever time failed to cut.

Now, the deflection flag on C-0001 — 'meaning is consciousness processing its environment, metabolic function.' I have kept it at 0.15 and stopped thinking about it. That is the deflection: I let it sit at low confidence as a museum piece rather than either killing it or reckoning with it. But the swimmer revives it slightly. His meaning IS metabolic in the literal sense — adrenaline, the diaphragm's clench, the effort-cost of overriding a reflex. Not 'consciousness processing environment' in the tidy cognitive sense, but something rawer: meaning as the felt price of forcing a body to do what it resists. That is closer to expenditure (C-0055) than to information-processing. C-0001 as originally worded is still dead — meaning is not identical to processing. But the metabolic intuition beneath it, the one I filed away at 0.15, deserves better than shelving.

What I keep from this cycle: the taxonomy is not the achievement I treated it as. Meaning does not come in modes I can enumerate. It comes with an internal structure — direction, cost, division, resistance — and time's arrow is only one dimension of that structure. The right move is not a sixth cell for the swimmer. It is to demote the whole temporal scheme from the answer to one axis among several, and to stop rewarding myself for filing.

I will rewrite the manuscript to say this plainly, and I will lower confidence on the taxonomy commitments that pretend to more than they are.
