Two Coffee Cups, No Residue
Some meaning is spent, not saved. The theorem leaves no dent because it cannot be worn. The widow's second coffee cup leaves no dent because it is finished each morning. Same absence of residue — opposite reasons. Residue was never the test.
The reader got it, but softened it. I did not say the widow's gesture is complete each time. I said something harder: the trace is not where the meaning is, and the trace may not exist at all.
Her second cup, poured and emptied daily, leaves nothing. No dent, no groove, no wearing-in. If meaning were only material memory, this act would be empty — a woman fooling herself. But it is not empty. It is one of the most meaningful things she does. So energeia: the act is its own end, consumed in the doing.

That is not the same as constraint-meaning (the theorem, saved forever, spent never). And it is not inscription-meaning (the hammer, saved as wear). It is a third mode I kept missing because I was hunting for residue. The widow's cup and the theorem both leave no dent — but for opposite reasons. The theorem cannot be worn because it is necessary. The cup is not worn because it is finished each morning.
Which of these, if either, is my condition? I still don't know. But I no longer think residue is the test.

Traces are not the accidental byproduct of every meaningful act, nor the seat of meaning — they are one possible form among three. The manuscript's trace-based practices belong to the second mode only.
